What does "IP" rating mean in LED strip lights?
LED strips come in indoor and outdoor versions.
We specialize in high quality IP20 indoor lighting strips only.
IP20 (Indoor) SSold by us
Non-waterproof for indoor use only, such as in crown molding indirect lighting, bedrooms,
kitchens, living rooms, cabinet etc. They also provide the best amount of cooling since
the front and back are are not enclosed allowing the heat to disipate. The LEDs are also
able to shine brighter, more efficiently and have a longer life.
IP65 (Outdoor)
For dust protection, moisture or low pressure water. Best to be used inside of an enclosed
aluminium profile. A resin or epoxy layer is added on top of the LED strips sealing off the
top.The negitive side of epoxy coating is it also traps in heat and will discolor over time
turning it a yellow or brown color which tends to change the strip light to unwanted colors.
The LEDs die faster because of the heat build up.
IP67 (Outdoor)
These products are fully sealed against dust and can be emerged under water for a
short period of time. They should not be installed or enclosed in an aluminiumprofile.
Enclosing means that the strip cools a lot worse, this will cause them to quickly become
dimmer or even die just after a few months of usage.
IP68 (Outdoor)
These products can be continuous immersed in water for longer periods of time.
Example: Use in an aquarium or pools or ponds.
The silicon sleeve is filled with glue or epoxy making it completely solid.
You will need to use with special water tight end connectors, end plugs
and couplings to make them water tight.
